The Deterica Kit

A prosthetic hand costs more than a car and takes months to obtain. Nobody should have to buy one to find out whether this control model suits them. The Deterica Kit is designed to let a person explore that control without a prosthetic hand. A contact fork reads rotation of the residual limb, and an app shows the virtual hand.

The two halves do not arrive together. The app is built, and it needs no hardware: it runs on a phone alone, and a person can learn the control model on the screen. The kit is in development. It will connect to the same app, and then a movement of the contact fork will move the hand on the screen.

What the kit is for

The kit is designed to let a person explore the control through their own movement. The user places the residual limb between the two blades of the contact fork and rotates it around the sensor axis. The app shows the hand that follows. The contact fork design is recorded; physical fit and the complete assembly still need testing.

A prosthetic hand is a commitment of money and of months. So the order here is deliberate: try the control, and then decide. The app stays free, and it needs no kit. Nothing on this page is advice on the choice of a prosthesis. Speak to a prosthetist.

The kit

A contact fork, two buttons, one light

The contact fork turns with the residual limb. A sensor reads its angle, and calibration maps that angle to the opening and closing of the virtual hand. The control electronics can run the buttons, light, and calibration without a phone.

The app shows a virtual hand that responds to movement input. It runs with no kit at all: an on-screen slider and two buttons drive the same control logic, so anybody can try the model before a kit exists.

The app

The hand on your phone, set up the way you want it

The app draws a prosthetic hand that exists, and it moves the way that hand moves. Move the on-screen slider and the fingers follow. Choose a grip and the hand takes it. Turn the hand over to look at the palm, and pinch to come closer.
